COOL CAFÉS GEILO
Far up in the mountains behind Geilo and at the foot of Hallingskarvet you find Prestholtseter, a popular destination both in summer and winter. Here you can buy genuine traditional Norwegian mountain cuisine as cured meats, custard, waffles and thin "lefse", served in traditional premises. Of course you can also get a long-awaited Solo or a bar of Kvikk Lunch chocolate.
The premises consist of small rooms with seating on both sides just inside the door and a larger room with the kiosk and several seating straight forward.
Prestholt is open in summer, autumn and winter. From their website we have taken following detailed overview:
Summer season: the first weekend in July to mid-August + weekends during the autumn holiday week 40. every day in the autumn holiday.
Winter Season: Christmas week every day from Dec 27. Weekends from second weekend in January for the winter week 8 after it every day except Wednesdays after Skarverennet.
In summer it is possible to drive all the way up. There is a large parking area for those who want to go hiking in the mountains or visit the café. The big attraction in recent years, in addition to Prestholtseter itself, is the stairs up to the Hallingskarvet, made by Sherpas from Nepal. The stairs have made it much more simpler and more accessible to climb to the top of Hallingskarvet during the summer and autumn months.
In winter you can only come here by skis. There are marked trails from both Geilo and Ustaoset. It is a perfect stop about half way if you go from Ustaoset to Geilo - a great and manageable cross country day trip for both children and adults.
