Tuva Turisthytte is located on the
Hardangervidda about 1200 meters above
sea level and not far from Ustaoset (“direct
line”). In summer, this is a great starting
point for hiking with several marked trails.
In winter, Tuva is the destination for cross-
country skiers on day trips. Many people
are lured by the waffles here. They are
widely known and based on a secret recipe.
Tuva was first built in 1915. Several
buildings were added later and are now run
by fourth generation owners.
Tuva Turisthytte
The café and cabins open at the end of
June and are open until the beginning of
September, and from mid-February to the
end of April. The café's opening hours are
1100 to 1700.
During these periods you can also stay
here. Tuva offers accommodation in two or
four bed rooms or in a dormitory. Dinner
and breakfast are included in the price.
To get to Tuva in the summer you can drive
via Skurdalen. It takes about 35 minutes
from Geilo on a gravel road that includes
parking at Tuva. The scenic drive up is
worth the trip in itself, and passes old
farms, lakes and “old” snow from last
winter. You also pass some areas with
great views of Hallingskarvet.
In winter you have to use your skis. The
shortest route is from Ustaoset. If the ice
on Ustevatnet is safe, you can cross
straight overthe lake along the marked
route and up the steep slopes. You can
also walk from the east end of Ustevannet,
along the marked route from here. There
are also marked trails from Geilo.
